Run a competition to see who can produce the best image around an Easter theme e.g. ‘hope’ or ‘new life’.

  • Launch the competition in schools, through community groups, and consider advertising in local media.

  • Have three age ranges such as one for Primary School children, one for Secondary School and one for adults. Depending on your budget you could also have runners up in each category.

  • Budget some money for a cash prize (around £250-£500 for each winner) which, in the adult category, could be donated to the charity of the winner’s choice and for the young people could go towards art equipment at their school.

  • Create a community celebration by holding an exhibition of all the submitted works and having a prize-giving as part of the event.

  • Who your panel of judges will be. It’s a great idea to include your Mayor, a local art teacher, a local artist, church leaders, a local newspaper editor or a local radio presenter.

  • Where you will have your exhibition. Your church building may be ideal, or this could be a great chance to engage with members of the public elsewhere for example at the local shopping centre or library. If you do this, think about how you will make sure people know this is run by the churches!

  • Prize alternatives. If you would rather not give a cash prize you could also ask local businesses to provide awards, or you could give prizes relevant to the genre used (e.g. art or photography equipment).

  • Media. Invite the local press to take pictures of the prize-giving and to interview one of the organisers. Be clear about why you’ve run the competition.

  • Who will be at your exhibition? Churches who have held competitions like this, found they have often led to poignant conversations with members of the community. Make sure you have some church members on hand during the evening, just to talk to people.

The arts are a great way to engage with your community, and competitions always draw a good response. The more local churches you involve, the bigger this idea will become!

Easter is celebrated artistically.
