Safe Families for Children (SFFC), is a new initiative offering churches a great opportunity to transform the lives of children and families, by offering hospitality, and practical support, to local families in crisis. It provides an informal but structured way for the Church to work with families who don’t have anyone else to turn to. With this support families can stay together, avoiding breakdown and children being taken into care. This early intervention approach has operated successfully in the United States for over 10 years and has recently been brought to the UK by the Vardy Foundation. Because SFFC is a brand new approach here in the UK, please check their website or contact their office to find out how you can work with them.

Safe Families for Children extends community support, by hosting vulnerable children and strengthening their families in crisis, through a network of volunteers, motivated by compassion.

The SFFC movement is based on the perspective that the safety and health of the children of our communities are the responsibility of each one of us and that parents are the key to providing a long term safe environment for their children.

SFFC has been working in the USA since 2002 and now operates in 14 states. It has already led to a clear reduction in the number of children taken into state care, as well as demonstrating a range of benefits, such as increased immunization rates and improved child development. Parents also report less stress and better parenting. Besides this direct impact on children and families, SFFC US has also seen a number of states amending their policies to allow volunteers from faith communities to host children.

Meanwhile churches have discovered the challenge and satisfaction of living out their faith, making a long-term difference for families and children and playing a significant role in the local community. In the UK, hard-pressed and under-resourced local authority staff have welcomed the potential of SFFC’s early intervention model to support and stabilise families, recognising and valuing its ability to meet a huge need.
