This generation of elderly people have mostly been brought up in the Christian faith, but they are often cut off from Church life when they move into residential care. Parche — Pastoral Action in Residential Care Homes for the Elderly — was set up to bring pastoral care to older people at this most vulnerable time in their lives, by linking local churches with older people living in residential care.

In Eastbourne, East Sussex, where the project was set up, teams from local churches are linked with 73 local care homes. Each month, the team of volunteers visit their care home to lead a short Christian service, and to chat with residents.

Parche provides training for the teams and resources including CDs of favourite hymn tunes, Bible studies and service guides.

All those in residential care have suffered loss of various kinds. Many will have lost their spouse. All of them have had to give up their home, along with most of their precious possessions. They will probably have lost physical or mental faculties. All of these losses cause pain and sadness. Parche team members find that, given the opportunity to talk, elderly folk will often ask questions about death and the value of life, whether or not they have been active members of a church in their younger days.

Pastoral support for the elderly.
