Description

To celebrate their 200th Anniversary, Trinity Chapel from Gower, South Wales organised a 'Year of Happiness' to try to engage with local people in a meaningful and fun way

Rationale

Around 200 years ago, during the long reign of George III, a small group of people in the north Gower villages of Llanmadoc, Cheriton, Cwm Ivy and Landimore started meeting together for worship. With the help of Lady Barham a small chapel was built in 1817 in Cheriton and the tiny congregation had a permanent home.

Two hundred years later a similarly small group of people meet in the chapel regularly to share about the message of Jesus and to seek to make this good news known to others. They recognised that, compared to a number of churches in the area, they were really quite young. For example St Madoc is reputed to have founded the church in Llanmadoc in the 6th century, over fourteen hundred years ago! However two hundred years is something worth celebrating and they considered how to mark this milestone. A decision was made to do something a bit different, possibly even unique. the church planned to have a year of happiness.

"The purpose of the Year of Happiness was to celebrate the 200th anniversary of Trinity Chapel by working together to consider what it is to be happy and to make steps to become happier." The congregation was keen for many local people to get involved as they sought together to bring happiness into their own lives and help others to do the same.

They planned to have Happy Hours, Happy Meals, Happy Birthdays, run The Happiness Lab and re-brand the Chapel as The Happy HQ. They had no idea if this would work but they planned to have fun giving it a go!
